Charborough

Charborough, the Construct City, is one of the thirteen Cities of Norn, constructed in the former territory of Temetul the Inconstant. It is Gothic city in the center of Norn that exists in a perpetual state of gray, where smog blocks much of the sunlight, warped gargoyles peer down from skyscrapers, and a group of armed drones serve as an omniscient police force.

Constructs

Four types of constructs populate Charborough today:

1. Domestics, or "Domes," are owned by people and perform domestic tasks like cooking, childcare, and laundry.
2. Municipals, or "Munis," are owned by the city, and provide public services like construction, trash collection, and firefighting.
3. Corporates, or "Corps," are owned by businesses and provide services related to their operation.
4. Stewards, also known as "Stews," "Soups," or "Clankers," are law enforcement constructs that report directly to the champion of Charborough. They provide services such as protecting citizens, preserving the peace, and violently capturing and punishing lawbreakers.

Some of these constructs are not complex enough to be considered sentient, and are commonly referred to as "tech" in Charborough. Nearly all Domestics are tech, while Municipals and Corporates are a mixture of tech and sentient creatures. All but the lowest-order Stewards are sentient.

History

Before humanoid forces set foot in Charborough, the land that would become Charborough was already structured into evenly-spaced grids of metal buildings.

Charborough's current Champion is Prudence Rosamund Steele, who uses a magical prosthetic arm in combat. She is known for her draconian policies on crime and imprisonment. Past Champions of Charborough include:

Research

Charborough invests heavily in empirical research, and several research institutions exist in the city:

Prisons

While most cities in Norn imprison only those deemed irredeemable, Charborough incarcerates people for minor offenses such as jaywalking or disturbing the peace. The largest prison in Charborough is Titanite. A team of wizards and engineers built this prison over the span of twenty years.

The entire prison complex is located within the yellow gemstone that the Champion of Charborough wears on a ring at all times. While inside, prisoners do not age and have no need to eat, drink, or sleep. At any given time, the Champion of Charborough carries around five thousand inmates whose sentences range from one month to four hundred years.
